Artist Statement

Lloyd Whannel is a licensed general contractor as well as a sculptor, so he has an extensive range of works, including water basins, fountains, patio tables, countertops, and virtually anything that can be made of stone. He works with a variety of different stones, including basalt, granite, and limestone, and enjoys pushing the boundaries of stone’s place in the home or garden.
Lloyd’s current figurative work involves two tall figure series he calls “Silent Watchers” and “Silent Words”. Both draw inspiration from the 3rd century B.C. Etruscan bronze figurine called “Ombra Della Sera” or “Shadow of the Evening”. They are intended to express feelings of serenity and peacefulness, reflecting an inner silence while maintaining an outward awareness.
