Artist Statement

Sabah says:” Art is a thread that has sustained me from childhood through my intense struggle to survive during my life in Iraq. Art was an outlet for a kind of spiritual transformation during those difficult times that helped me heal and become open to the beauty and joy of living. Art is a place of expression and meditation in which I celebrate and connect with that Joy. The intention of my work is to share this celebration with others.”

About Sabah

Sabah Al-Dhaher is a sculptor and painter who received his formal training at the Institute for Fine Arts in Basra, Iraq. Since coming to the U.S. as a political refugee in 1993, he has made his home in Seattle. In addition to maintaining his studio, Sabah teaches stone carving at the Pratt Fine Arts Center in Seattle.

Sabah is a figurative sculptor but typically focuses primarily on torsos, leaving some areas in an unfinished state, as if the sculpture were a vision emerging from a dream.
